Getting Started

What should I wear to my first class?

For your free trial class, comfortable workout clothes like a t-shirt and sweatpants are perfect. You don't need a Judo gi for your first class. However, if you want to experience the authentic feel of Judo training, we offer gi rentals for $30. If you decide to continue training, you'll eventually need your own gi.

Do I need a gi (uniform)?

Not for your first trial class! You can wear regular workout clothes to get started. If you want the full authentic experience, we offer gi rentals for $30. Once you decide to continue training, you'll need to purchase your own gi. We can help you choose the right one that fits your budget, typically ranging from $70-150.

I'm not very fit - can I still start Judo?

Absolutely! Judo is completely beginner-friendly, and you'll naturally get fit as you train. Our classes are designed to accommodate all fitness levels, and you'll gradually build strength, flexibility, and endurance through practice. Many of our students started with no fitness background and now love how strong and confident they feel.

What are the initial costs to start training?

The initial costs include a one-time enrollment fee of $50 and your first month's tuition. For training gear, you'll need a judo gi (uniform), but if you already have a BJJ gi, you can use that to start. A new judo gi typically costs between $70-150. We can provide recommendations for quality gis that fit your budget.

Do I need any martial arts experience?

No experience is necessary! Our beginner classes are designed to teach you from the ground up, starting with the basics of movement, balance, and safety. Our experienced instructors will guide you through each step of your journey.

Is Judo safe?

Yes, Judo is very safe when practiced properly. We emphasize proper technique, gradual progression, and safety first. All students learn breakfalls (ukemi) before advancing to throwing techniques. Our instructors are certified and experienced in teaching safe, effective Judo.

How often should I train?

For beginners, we recommend attending 2-3 classes per week. This allows for proper recovery while maintaining steady progress in your training. As you advance and your body adapts, you can increase your training frequency.

Progression

What's the difference between basic and advanced classes?

Basic classes focus on fundamental techniques, proper form, and safety. Advanced classes incorporate more complex techniques, competition strategies, and higher-intensity training. All levels include both standing techniques (tachi-waza) and ground techniques (ne-waza).

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

The journey to black belt typically takes 3-5 years of consistent training. However, Judo is about personal growth rather than just belt advancement. Each step of the journey brings its own rewards and developments.

Can I compete in tournaments?

Yes! We encourage students who are interested in competition to participate in local and regional tournaments. Our advanced classes include competition-specific training, and our instructors have extensive competition experience to guide you.
